There are 2 open positions for a PhD students at the University of Verona in the ARMADA Doctoral Network. The positions are 1 in Computer Science and 1 in Linguistics.

ARMADA will provide a 36-month training programme to 15 doctoral candidates (DCs), aiming to deliver world-class scientific education in artificial intelligence (AI), while promoting responsible research and the development of both technical and transferable skills. The programme is designed to prepare researchers to thrive in international academic and industrial environments, with strong work ethics, creativity, entrepreneurial mindset, and cultural awareness.

PhD Position in Neuro-symbolic knowledge-aware analytical processing

Topic

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student to join us at the University of Verona and contribute to a groundbreaking project focused on using knowledge graphs to improve grounding of large language models (LLMs) in the context of conversational data exploration and analytics.
The position involves research in Neuro-symbolic reasoning and Neuro-database interfaces over large-scale knowledge graphs. The successful candidate will work on cutting-edge topics at the intersection of databases and semantic technologies.

Candidate profile

  • In-depth knowledge and experiences within at least one of the following areas: knowledge graphs, graph data management, machine learning, LLMs.

  • Strong programming skills and experience with developing research prototypes.
  • Ability to develop methods, concepts, as well as their implementation and evaluation.
  • Willingness to contribute in interdisciplinary projects.
  • Organizational and analytical skills as well as a structured way of working.
  • Ability to work in a team, problem-solving skills, and creative thinking.
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills in English. (Knowledge of Italian is not required and will not constitute an element of preference)
  • willingness to travel and live in another country.

Special Conditions and Opportunities

This position is part of the European MSCA Doctoral Network ARMADA, which in total offers 15 positions. Hence, applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Italy for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the starting date of the position.
The contract will be for 3-year full-time position and include the chance to spend a period of a few months with another one of the host institutions during a planned secondment.

PhD Position in Analysis of bias in training materials for chatbots/LLM via linguistic corpora analysis

Topic

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join the University of Verona to work on a cutting-edge project focused on identifying and analyzing bias in the training materials and in the output of chatbots and large language models (LLMs). The research will involve the application of linguistic and corpus-based methods to uncover structural and semantic biases across large-scale textual datasets. This work lies at the intersection of computational linguistics, corpus analysis, and AI ethics, and will contribute to the broader goals of the ARMADA network in improving the trustworthiness and transparency of LLMs.
